Pathfinder Guide Dog Programme

Our founder Anne (who is blind herself) discovered there was a long waiting list for a new German Shepherd once her old one had retired. She felt that a waiting time for mobility of up to 3 years was a very long time and decided to do something to help ease the situation.

Initially to make sure there was a demand for German Shepherds, Anne completed 4 different surveys of the blind community throughout the United Kingdom. These surveys came back as a resounding YES for more German Shepherds, as well as a resounding YES for indepth, controlled, residential centre training.

Scouting Ireland has just completed a huge programme of renewal and redevelopment over the past 5-6 years. This has taken the ideals, principles and traditions of Scouting and made them into a practical Scouting that is also appealing and exciting for the young people of today. We have developed and designed brand new, age specific, publications that will appeal and be reactionary to different age ranges. We are focusing on Personal Development and a clear and progressive Adventure Skills structure – rather than a traditional ‘merit badge’ system This process has given us a unified Association backed by a ONE Programme from Beaver Scouts 6 years of age right through to Rover Scouts 25 years of age.
