Newlyweds Nazry and Hope Mustakim had big plans to make Waco a better place and were on their way to becoming one of the city’s leading “power teams.”
Their dream to open a home for neglected teens, and to build a faith-based program for those with addictions were on track to become reality as Hope finishes her undergraduate degree in social work at Baylor University.
That was until March 30, when armed agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) knocked on the door of their home, woke up the couple at 7 a.m. and hauled away Nazry, called Naz by everyone who knows him.
Despite his complete rehabilitation and extensive contribution to society, Naz was detained by ICE is now facing “removal proceedings” by the Department of Homeland Security for his 2007 drug charge.
To deport a loving husband, college grad, new homeowner, community activist, passionate volunteer, and valued employee is at the top of DHS’s to-do list? Someone who is a non-risk to society, committed a non-violent crime that harmed no one but himself, who turned his life around for the better and is now GIVING back to the community that believed in him from the beginning of his recovery? This is injustice.
Nazry is a committed member of two church fellowships, actively involved in a 12 step recovery program where he holds positions in both local and regional committees and sponsors several other recovering addicts. The attempt to deport Naz has already brought hardship to Naz’s newlywed wife, friends, sponsees, and family. His removal from the country would be an alarming violation of the principles of family unity.
