Food prices - from crisis to stability
Price swings, upswings in particular, represent a major threat to food security in developing countries. Hardest-hit are the poor. According to the World Bank, in 2010-2011 rising food costs pushed nearly 70 million people into extreme poverty.
“FOOD PRICES – FROM CRISIS TO STABILITY” has been chosen as this year’s World Food Day theme to shed some light on this trend and what can be done to mitigate its impact on the most vulnerable.
On World Food Day 2011, let us look seriously at what causes swings in food prices, and do what needs to be done to reduce their impact on the weakest members of global society.
Next time you go for shopping or throw food away, think of the people (in the Horn of Africa) that are dying because of famine.
"Roughly 1.3bn tonnes of food is either lost or wasted globally due to inefficiencies throughout the food supply chain, says the report, based on research by the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology (Sik). Food wasted by consumers in rich countries (222m tonnes) is roughly equal to the entire food production of sub-Saharan Africa (230m tonnes)."
"For decades, wasting food has fallen into the category of things that everyone knows is a bad idea but that few do anything about, sort of like speeding and reapplying sunscreen. Didn’t your mother tell you to eat all the food on your plate?"

World MS Day 2011
In 2010 the theme for World MS Day was 'Employment'. A survey launched by MSIF had 12,000 respondents and showed that simple, low-cost changes to the work place would have enabled thousands of people to stay in work for longer. Flexible working hours, seated work, and a place to rest during the day were all low cost solutions that could have a huge impact on the working lives of people with Multiple Sclerosis.
The 2011 theme is 'Work and MS' with a focus on the changes that employers can make to the workplace to enable people with chronic fluctuating diseases like MS to stay in work. Take the 2011 survey or sign the petition at www.worldmsday.org.
